Dear Parents

Year 10 Worcester Road Campus

I would like to introduce myself as the new Chief Executive of Shrewsbury Academies Trust. Having started with the Trust on 28th May 2018, I look forward to welcoming you to Shrewsbury Academy and the wider Trust in September this year.

I have led many successful schools as a Headteacher and several Trusts. Please be reassured that myself, the new Board of Trustees and Jon Arnold, Headteacher Shrewsbury Academy bring a wealth of experience to ensure that your children have the best possible education at Shrewsbury Academy.

There has been a lack of clarity about how the previous Trust leadership was intending to implement the original vision for Shrewsbury Academy to be on one site. However, yesterday we received, finally, the very good news that we are to receive a large capital grant to expand facilities at the Corndon Crescent Campus site including new science labs.  This work will commence once the planning process is completed and will be finished by December 2018.

Having run many schools, I am very clear that the best scenario is when all our staff and students are on one campus so that the complete focus is on the young people and not on complicated transport and other arrangements. Therefore, we are not allowing any split year groups as we feel this does not provide the best educational experience for any group of young people.  I have decided, in consultation with senior staff, that all new Year 11s (current Year 10) will be based on Shrewsbury Academy Corndon Crescent Campus from September 2018.

Jon Arnold and I have been part of the leadership groups of highly successful schools with very high levels of examination success and we have taken this decision in order to maximise the examination potential of all students. We do not believe that a split year group with staff and students having to move around between the two sites is making the most effective use of curriculum time and focusing intensive support for your child, rather than wasted time on transport and travelling.

We have made the decision for this transition to commence at the start of the academic year rather than disturbing Year 11 half way through their final year, as the Worcester Road site will be closing in December 2018.

For clarity this means that all Year 11 students will be on the Corndon Crescent Campus from September 2018.

Mr Arnold will be writing to you next week detailing some of the exciting changes and developments that will be happening in the school and inviting you to meet ourselves on:

Year 10 and Year 11          Wednesday 5th September 2018.at 6.00 pm

Year 8 and Year 9              Thursday 6th September 2018 at 6.00 pm

I apologise on behalf of the previous Trust Board and leadership for the uncertainty and lack of clarity in the planning process as we move towards one site. I will ensure that there is complete clarity in all further communications with you as parents, although now this decision has been made there will be no further changes.  Along with Jon Arnold and the senior leadership team, I will be meeting you during the first few weeks of the new term in September at the “Meet the Head” presentation to be held on Wednesday 5th September 2018 at 6.00 pm on the Corndon Crescent Campus, and will be more than happy to discuss this and any other matters with you in person.

Yours sincerely

David Brown
