Dear Parents

Year 7 Intake September 2018

I would like to introduce myself as the new Chief Executive of Shrewsbury Academies Trust. Having started with the Trust on 28th May 2018, I look forward to welcoming you to Shrewsbury Academy and the wider Trust in September this year.

I have led many successful schools as a Headteacher and several Trusts. Please be reassured that myself, the new Board of Trustees and Jon Arnold, Headteacher Shrewsbury Academy bring a wealth of experience to ensure that your children have the best possible education at Shrewsbury Academy.

There has been a lack of clarity about how the previous Trust leadership was intending to implement the original vision for Shrewsbury Academy to be on one site. However, yesterday we finally received, the very good news that we are to receive a large capital grant to expand facilities at the Corndon Crescent Campus site including new science labs.  This work will commence once the planning process is completed and will be finished by December 2018.  This is, of course, only phase 1 of the exciting development of Shrewsbury Academy, with our longer term plans for a completely new building on one site to be the fulfilment of the original vision of Shrewsbury Academy from several years ago.

Clearly the Autumn term will be a busy term for us all at the school and with building work taking place on site myself, Jon Arnold and senior staff at the school have been considering the most effective organisation for the Autumn term. We have decided that to ensure maximum support is given to your child during their transition into secondary school that all students will be on the Worcester Road site to enable a bespoke Year 7 curriculum and an effective introduction to secondary education. This will allow us to build a cohesive Year group, taking the advantages of primary education into the secondary context whilst enabling a nurturing environment.  The senior staff responsible for Year 7 will remain with them throughout this period and beyond as the whole school, including Year 7 comes together on the Corndon Crescent Campus on Tuesday 8th January 2019.

Having run many schools, I am very clear that the best scenario is when all our staff and students are on one campus so that the complete focus is on the young people and not on complicated transport and other arrangements. Therefore, we are not allowing any split year groups as we think this works against the best education and positive ethos within any group of young people.  I have decided, in consultation with senior staff, that all Year 7s will be based on Shrewsbury Academy Worcester Road Campus from September 2018.

For clarity this means that all Year 7 students will be on the Worcester Road Campus from September 2018 through to December 2018.

They will begin the New Year with all students and all staff at our new, improved Corndon Crescent Campus on Tuesday 8th January 2019.

I apologise on behalf of the previous Trust Board and leadership for the miscommunication and I will ensure that there is complete clarity in all further communications with you as parents. Along with Jon Arnold and the senior leadership team, I will be meeting you during the first few weeks of the new term in September at the “Meet the Head” presentation to be held on Wednesday 12th September 2018 at 6.00 pm on the Worcester Road Campus, and will be more than happy to discuss this and any other matters with you in person.

Yours sincerely

David Brown
