Headteachers letter

Dear Parent(s)/Carer(s)

It has been another busy half term at Shrewsbury Academy.

We were delighted to welcome our Year 7 students to the Corndon Crescent Campus at the end of January and they have settled in very well.

The new classrooms are very impressive and will greatly benefit the students.

I hope you found the time to join us to watch the school show ‘Legally Blonde’, which was incredible! Students were a huge credit to the school and their efforts were quite phenomenal in producing a show that made the audience both sing along and laugh out loud.

In January 2019 staff and parents were privileged to attend sessions with Gary Wilson, a renowned Boys Achievement expert. Teachers have picked up so many tips from Gary and have been using these in lessons and I am sure that like me, parents have been looking at their interactions at home.

Preparations for the Year 11 examination period are going well. The Mock exams in December gave us a good steer as to where our students are working currently. In order to support them to the maximum all of the following measures have been taken since January 2019.

  • Hosted an evening with Head of Departments for Mathematics, English and Science, this was well attended by students and parents alike.
  • Revamped form time so that students are spending an increased time studying.
  • Purchased a renowned online Mathematics programme ‘Hegarty Maths’ that all students have log in details for.
  • Introduced a Prom Contract to motivate the students to strive to do their best in every lesson.

Over the coming weeks we will be hosting more evenings for students and parents with Head of Departments from other subjects across the curriculum.

We strongly encourage you to ensure that your son / daughter spends time revising at home and urge you to familiarise yourselves with their revision timetables that they have produced.

There are two guided Option evenings coming up in the school calendar. These are for current Year 8 and Year 9 students who will be choosing their subjects to study in Key Stage Four.

We will be coming in line with most successful schools in the country and allowing our students the opportunity to study for their GCSE qualifications over three year to help maximize their prospects.

Thank you for the support that you have given the school regarding uniform standards. This is really making a difference to standards. We have also been very pleased that students are using planners more to support their learning and we urge you to read the notes recorded in these on a weekly basis.

I have been delighted with our most recent staffing appointments, especially in English and Mathematics where we have recruited some exceptional practitioners who have joined us recently and / or are about to start at the school from Easter 2019.

Our working relationship with Shrewsbury School continues to grow and our Year 11 students are flourishing in their Mathematics lessons on the Shrewsbury School campus.

We have started to build a very positive working partnership with the Severn Bridges Trust (Radbrook, Mount Pleasant and Greensfields Schools) and we are really pleased that our partner Primary school The Grange School received an excellent interim Ofsted report.

I am also delighted to welcome Dara Carroll, former Senior Deputy Head at Thomas Telford School and Headteacher at Milton Keynes Academy together with Kim Popratnjak MBE former Principal of North Birmingham Academy and Regional Principal of the Focus Learning Trust who will be working alongside me as Associate Headteachers for the remainder of this academic year. Their contributions so far have been invaluable as we implement changes that will help the continued improvement of the school.

Lastly, I hope that everyone has a fantastic half term holiday and comes back refreshed and ready to go again in the build up to Easter.

Yours sincerely

Mr J Arnold
