Headteachers Letter – Easter

PDF version of this letter

Dear Parent(s)/Carer(s)

It has been an exciting half term at Shrewsbury Academy.

Last week we held our termly Achievement Evening. It was lovely to see so many students recognized for their tremendous efforts and high attainment in curriculum areas across the school. We were privileged to enjoy the company of Professor Mark Barrow, a former student, as guest speaker.

I look forward to the next Achievement Evening in July where we will celebrate more wonderful achievements of our students.

If there are parents who work for companies might be interested in sponsoring an award for the Achievement Evenings, we would really like to hear from you.

Session 6

This continues to be a leading factor in helping to raise attainment across the Academy. We encourage you to talk to your children about the value of attending these small group sessions on a weekly basis. The full list of sessions are available on our website.

Current predications for Year 11 results in August 2019 are significantly ahead of the previous three years. Arrangements for Summer examinations are as follows:- For most students at Corndon Crescent Campus examination will be placed on site. However, to provide the best conditions for all our students arrangements have been made for those student who require some assistance, in the guise of readers or scribes, to sit their examinations at our Worcester Road Campus. Further details will be provided nearer the time. Current predictions for year 10 students indicates a further substantial improvement. Lots of this progress has been gained by the excellent attendance to Session 6.

In March we were pleased when four of our students were nominated for the Shropshire High Sheriffs Award and truly delighted when Mia Booth in Year 7 was awarded the Outstanding Young Citizenship award for Shropshire. This was a very proud moment for the school and Mia’s family.

This term we have appointed next year’s Year 11 Head Boy and Head Girl. Many congratulations to:

  • Head Girl – Morgan Jones
  • Head Boy – Joe Bowkett
  • Deputy Head Girl – Annabelle Kinsey Owen
  • Deputy Head Boy – Owen Watton

It has long been a frustration of mine that having been School Leaders in the Primary School most children face a 3-4 year wait to be given roles of responsibility, so over the next few weeks we will be appointing Head Girls and Boys of all year groups and these students will be playing leading roles in our Student Council

Recently teachers have been making positive links with our feeder Primary Schools and I look forward to seeing students as young as Year 4/5 take part in events hosted at Shrewsbury Academy. One of the most interesting developments is the forming of a working partnership with the Severn Bridges Trust which includes Mount Pleasant, Greenfields and Radbrook Schools. We are particularly interested in being able to share good practice and raise the amount of challenge for students coming into Year 7 in the future.

During the Easter holidays there will be various revision sessions taking place in school. On Friday 26th April 2019 at 10.00am we are hosting a ‘Big Clean Up’. We want to welcome the support of any students, parents or carers to help us make sure there is no litter at all on the school grounds and surrounding areas, ahead of the summer term.

Moving forward we will be aiming to have a totally ‘litter free’ school and will be working with our students to raise their awareness and try to achieve this.

Summer Term

Schools naturally will be holding assemblies and events to commemorate the anniversary of the death of Stephen Lawrence. We will be taking part in this week of action and are seeking to ensure that all students are provided with a rounded knowledge of the impact of knife crime on people’s lives.

Uniform at the school has been much improved this year and I would like to extend my sincere thanks for your support with this. A few timely reminders on this topic are as follows:

Trainers are not to be worn, we expect all students to wear school shoes.

Nose piercings are not allowed and we will be insisting that skirts and trousers are appropriate in length and fit in accordance with the uniform policy

(Please see the Uniform for guidance and information)

Looking ahead to the summer term I want to bring to your attention the Year 9 Parents Evening which is being held on 8th May 2019. and the Year 8 Parents Evening on 26th June 2019. I would also like to address attendance and lateness. It is most important that all students are in school and ready to start at 08.45am and that the entrance to school is via the front of the school only.

As we leave the Spring term behind, we say goodbye to Mrs Williams and Miss Cox. I would like to say thank you for their efforts and enthusiasm during this year and throughout their time at the school.

A warm welcome is extended to some of our new teachers, including, Mr Layton and Mr Hardy, we are confident that they will have a fantastic influence on the education of our students.

I hope that everyone has a very enjoyable Easter break with family and friends and I look forward to starting back on Monday 29th April 2019.

Yours sincerely

Mr J Arnold
