To the Parent(s)/Carer(s) of all Yr. 10 students
The school has organised a Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural (SMSC) day to be held on 5th July 2019. These days are important as they provide a chance for us to discuss and inform students about many important social, moral and personal matters that may not be included in the school curriculum. Sometimes this involves discussing quite sensitive issues with students. Our second SMSC day this year deals with British Values, a statutory right for our young people. Students will learn about many different health, safety and personal care matters.
Due to the subject content it is important to inform parents/carers when this is taking place. Year 10 students will be considering some very sensitive issues that are listed below. The content will be discussed in a delicate and professional manner and where necessary training has been provided for the staff to ensure that they are comfortable and confident with materials and messages.
During the day students will be exploring a range of topics both in class with Academy staff and with external professionals. The topics will include:
- British Values
- The Prevent Agenda
- Knife Crime
- Boys- positive masculinity and raising boys aspirations
- Girls- pregnancy and its implications
We would be grateful for your support in raising the awareness of your son/daughter regarding the importance of these topics. We also hope that they will continue to discuss these issues with you following the day. If you have any concerns or need further clarification regarding the day, please do not hesitate to contact me at the Academy.
